KARATE IS GREAT FOR KIDS.
“I often hear that karate is a great activity for kids, but why exactly is that?”
We are glad you asked. Below you’ll find just a few of the known mental and physical benefits of practicing the martial arts, no matter the age.
Self-Discipline
“With Self-Discipline most anything is possible.” Theodore Roosevelt. Marital Arts is an excellent way to enhance self-discipline. The ability to take action regardless of our physical, mental, or emotional state teaches us that “motivation follows action.” Earning rank and becoming proficient at martial arts is an outstanding way to exercise your self-discipline muscle.
Confidence
“Seven times down, eight times up” is a famous Japanese maxim. We use it often to illustrate the perseverance utilized to overcome challenges as part of the martial arts learning process. Students learn to believe in their own ability to “figure it out” that leads to an increase in self-confidence.
Goal Setting
The structured belt rank system of martial arts allows students to set both short-term and long-term goals. We help our students achieve their goals by working together, consistently with applied self discipline on a customized plan. Developing the Habit of setting and achieving goals, students learn to be self-motivated in and out of the dojo.
Respect
Respect is a cornerstone of the martial arts. Respect is displayed by showing positive feelings and attitudes towards oneself and fellow students. By bowing to instructors, classmates, and opponents at competition, one learns to treat others with decency and kindness.
Self-Esteem
Self – Esteem is confidence in one’s own self-worth and abilities. In class, we teach students to always do their very best and that there is always honor in the effort. This teaches students not to compare themselves to others but to feel good about their personal achievements and their own progress, thus allowing students to focus on their strengths and unique qualities.
Teamwork
Martial Arts training is unique in that it is a personal pursuit done in a team environment. Students have the luxury of learning at their own pace while sharing the common goal of improving their technique and earning their next rank. After just one class, it is obvious how supportive of A team environment the dojo (karate school) is!
Conflict Resolution
Conflict is an unfortunate part of life. We give students healthy step-by-step conflict resolution guidance and help them understand that they can not always control the conflict, but they can control their reaction to it. Of course, having a high level of confidence and self-esteem gained through training helps immensely in resolving conflict. We also teach students that the goal of self-defense is to get home safely.
Get Active
Traditionaly martial arts training is a healthy, fun, and engaging activity to combat childhood inactivity and obesity. Currently, less than 25% of children get the recommended amount of physical activity that helps them lead balanced, productive lives. Karate is an excellent catalyst to help students get into outstanding shape both physically and mentally.
